Buy now pay later methods let customers pay in installments over time. You’re paid immediately and in full and your customers pay nothing or a portion of the total at purchase time. Buy now pay later methods are often used by:
- Retailers selling high value goods like mattresses or luxury items.
- Retailers selling low value goods that want to increase average cart size and reach new customers.

At checkout, the customer chooses to pay in installments using a buy now pay later method. The customer is redirected to the buy now pay later method’s site or app to create an account or log in. They can accept or decline the terms of the repayment plan and return to your checkout flow.
Warning Stripe automatically presents payment methods to your customers by evaluating their currency, payment method restrictions and other parameters. We recommend that you set up your payment methods from the Stripe Dashboard according to the instructions in the Receiving Payment section.
If you want to continue manually configuring the payment methods presented to customers through Checkout, use this guide (for example, to accept payments in order mode). Otherwise, go to the dashboard.
Postpaid is a one-time express payment method that requires customers to confirm their payment. Customers will be directed to the Afterpay website where they agree to the payment terms. If the customer agrees to the terms,
Afterpay guarantees that the funds are available to the customer and transfers the funds to your Stripe account. The customer repays the transfer directly over time. Activate Afterpay as a payment method When you create a new Checkout session, you must: Add afterpay_clearpay to payment_types_list. Make sure all line items use your home currency. To collect shipping addresses, add your country to shipping_address_collection[allowed_countries]. If you don’t collect shipping addresses through Checkout, enter the shipping address in payment_intent_data[shipping].
